Sherwood photographs collection [graphic], 1898-1899

This collection contains photographs taken by either Andrew Sherwood or his son, Hugh M. Sherwood, during their time prospecting for gold in Alaska and the Yukon Territory in 1898-1899. Andrew Sherwood, a geologist from Mansfield, Pa., led an expedition for the Alaska Mining and Prospecting Co. of prospectors and miners to the Klondike via the Teslin Trail, leaving in May 1898 and returning the following spring. They camped along the Klondike and Stikine Rivers and wintered at Fort Wrangell, Alaska. The photographs depict camp life and work and views of scenery, as well as unidentified portraits of family members and of a Sherwood family home in Vancouver, B.C. The Sherwoods later moved to Portland, Or.

The Alaska Mining and Prospect Company was formed in Elmira, New York in 1897 and incorporated on December 24, 1897 in Colorado. Sale of stock in the company was to support an expedition to the Klondike to locate and mine gold. The president of the company was John M. Diven of Elmira.
